Sycamore Tree: A historic tree in such a wonderful place, it inspired and gave such delight to so many people

On the 28th of September 2023 we heard the sad and unimaginable news that the famous and historic Sycamore tree on Hadrians wall had been deliberately felled.

Sycamore Tree had been planted in a time before motor cars, airplanes and telephones. It had stood - in that amazing gap on Hadrian's wall - healthy and sturdy long before our great, great grandparents were born, it had grown tall and strong through a century of two world wars, it had remained unharmed by more than 150 years of weather and tens of thousands of visitors.

It was a unique tree in such a wonderful place and it gave such delight to so many people. I have walked along Hadrian's wall many times and like so many others I always paused at Sycamore Gap to enjoy the moment, to reflect, admire the tree and the landscape and to take a photograph, this is the fine art image I created of Sycamore Tree.
